Kimmeridge Class

Welcome to our class!

Year 4 Residential Trip - PGL, Osmington Bay 28th~30th March

Arrangements are well under way for our annual trip to PGL. Letters were sent home last week regarding the payment schedule, so please check your child's bag! If you do not receive a copy of the letter please call into class.

Further information regarding kit lists etc., will be available in due course.

Henry VIII Parent Assembly

To celebrate all the children's hard work in our Henry VIII topic this half term, we would like to invite you to a special topic assembly on Friday 10th February at 9.15 a.m. in Kimmeridge Class.

The children would like to share their Henry VIII learning journey with you, so please come along if you are free.

We understand that some of you won't be able to attend due to working commitments, so please do feel free to pop in whenever you can to look at our Henry VIII art work displayed in the classroom. The children have also started to create their own Henry VIII powerpoints. Once these are finished, you are more than welcome to pop in and have a look at them with your child, at your convenience.

We hope to see you on Friday morning!

In the meantime, we had a very enjoyable and successful day at Hampton Court Palace!

PARENT READERS

Thank you very much for agreeing to be a parent reader in Kimmeridge Class – we really appreciate your time and support.

Below are a few points to note, which will hopefully help you to feel confident in your role and answer any questions you may have.

  • Please sign in at the office when you arrive at school and then sign out when you have finished your session.
  • Please come into the classroom when the children come in from ‘Wake and Shake’ and we will give you a short list of children to read with.
  • Please let us know how you would like the children to address you – either by title and your surname or by your first name (we don’t mind – it’s whichever you are more comfortable with).
  • Take about 10 minutes with each child and encourage them to tell you what has happened so far, if they have already started a book, before they start to read. (If they are unsure, flick through the pages with them, to aid their memory.)
  • If they haven’t started a book yet, encourage them to make some predictions about the story – based on title / front picture – before they start.
  • Let them try to break any unknown words down themselves (encourage sounding out the phonetically spelt words). Any ‘tricky’ words – help them to chunk them down into known sounds – or help them to read it and then ask them to read the word back to you a couple of times.
  • Encourage them to use expression for character speech and remind them to pause at full stops and take a breath.
  • Please record the reading session in their reading records by noting down the date, book title and note down that they read with you  (Read with Bernie / Read with Mrs Lightfoot etc)
  • Always write a positive comment in their reading records. Below are a selection that might help you:
    • Clear reading with a steady pace.
    • Fluent reading with a good understanding of the text.
    • Super expression today / You tried hard with your expression today.
    • Well done for pausing at full stops.
    • Well done for sounding out words you didn’t know.
    • You could retell the main points of the story to me.
    • Good predictions made based on the first chapter read.
    • etc !

If children need to change their reading books, please ask them to swap them and make a note of their new books. When you have finished the session, let the Kimmeridge staff know of any ‘new’ books, so that we can log them on their individual sheets.

PLEASE NOTE:  PARENT HELPERS CAN NOT MOVE CHILDREN ON TO THE NEXT
COLOUR BAND
only school staff are allowed move children through the band system.
If a child says they have read all the books in the band, please refer them to a Kimmeridge staff member, as we have a list to check against.

Thank you again for offering to come and help us. If there’s anything we haven’t covered and you are unsure of anything, please just ask.

The children love reading with helpers – so enjoy their enthusiasm and know that you are doing something wonderful !

Thank you!
